What is it?

The Ultra-Low Power JDI 0.96" 144x72 Color Memory LCD is a cutting-edge display technology designed to deliver exceptional performance while maintaining minimal power consumption.

I don't have the datasheet or official specs for this display. I believe the actual model might be LPM009M349A. I've uploaded a similar screen's datasheet for reference. Most, if not all, functionalities should be compatible with this screen.

The demo video below runs below 200 uA at refresh rates above 80 fps. This memory LCD is perfect for applications where battery life, readability and fast response are paramount.

This reflective display is readable under direct sunlight and requires less power because it doesn't need a backlight in bright environments!

Key Benefits:

Ultra-Low Power Consumption: Consuming less than 200 uA, the JDI 0.9" Memory LCD significantly extends battery life, making it ideal for portable and wearable devices. This efficiency surpasses other display technologies like OLED, which typically require more power.

Fast Refresh Rates: The Memory LCD technology offers rapid refresh rates, ensuring smooth and responsive updates. This is crucial for applications requiring real-time data display, such as fitness trackers and medical monitors. In the demo below, the Memory LCD is driven by an "Itsy Bitsy" dev board. It is running at around 80+ fps. If you drive it with a faster microcontroller like the Cortex M4, it could go up to at least 170 fps!

High Visibility in Bright Environments: Designed to perform in various lighting conditions, the Memory LCD excels in bright environments, including direct sunlight. Unlike OLED displays, which can struggle with readability under bright light, the Memory LCD remains clear and legible, making it perfect for outdoor use.

The board has the following pinouts:

  • VIN: 3.3V
  • SI: SPI Serial Data Input Signal also known as MOSI (Master Out Slave In)
  • DISP: Display ON/OFF Switching Signal
  • SCS: SPI Chip Select Signal
  • SCLK: SPI Serial Clock Signal
  • GND

This LCD works using SPI communication. You can use open source Arduino libraries such as: Japan Display Inc. library for Arduino

Potential Use Cases:

Wearable Devices: Fitness trackers and smartwatches benefit immensely from the low power consumption and high visibility of the Memory LCD. Users can enjoy longer battery life and clear readability during outdoor activities.

DIY Smart Glasses: For makers experimenting with smart glasses or heads-up displays, the Memory LCD offers a lightweight, low-power solution that ensures the display remains visible even in bright sunlight. This is ideal for applications such as augmented reality or real-time notifications.

Solar-Powered Gadgets: Makers designing solar-powered gadgets can leverage the Memory LCD's ultra-low power consumption to create devices that can operate solely on solar energy. This is perfect for environmental monitoring devices, garden sensors, or outdoor information displays that need to run autonomously.

Custom Wearable Communication Devices: Enthusiasts creating wearable communication devices, such as custom smartwatches or walkie-talkies, can utilize the Memory LCD for its low power draw and clear display. This ensures that the devices are lightweight, efficient, and easy to read in various lighting conditions, making them practical for everyday use and outdoor adventures.
